The '3 Iraqs' "solution" ?

It appears now that even the Bush administration is looking for a way to honorably withdraw from Iraq. With midterm elections approaching, key figures in both major U.S. political parties are losing faith in the "stay the course" policy and are looking for a fast way out.

The major media are once again floating a trial balloon for a liberal left idea. They are increasingly pounding away at the concept of creating a kind of "federal Iraq." This is a code phrase for dividing Iraq into three autonomous zones.

Taking into account the three major population groups in Iraq, the proposed divisions would include the Kurdish Zone in the north, the Shiites in the south, and the Sunnis in the center of the country.

When I first heard it, I even entertained the idea for a brief moment. But after reflecting on the history of this area, I quickly changed my mind. When the vast Ottoman Turkish Empire was defeated in World War I, none of the present Muslim nations existed.

The Ottomans, who ruled that part of the world for four centuries, systematically destroyed national entities and made them regions under the direct control of Istanbul.

The conquering British and French created the present nations and their borders. Iraq did not even exist until Winston Churchill took a map and with his pen drew its present borders. The same thing was done for most of the Middle East. Nations were created with a stroke of a pen. The chaotic aftermath illustrates what happens when the West interjects its ideas into Middle East problems without understanding the peculiar nature of each area and how important the Muslim sects are that inhabit them.

They were almost totally ignorant of 1) the ancient tribal homelands and the fierce rivalry between certain tribes, and 2) the areas that were traditionally controlled by certain sects of Islam and just how important that control is. When Churchill casually sketched the borders of the new nation of Iraq, he guaranteed that there would be problems that could only be contained by a brutal dictator like Saddam Hussein.

Unwittingly, Churchill forced together into one entity the Kurds, whom everyone hated, the Sunni sect, which was a minority in the area, and the majority Shiite sect.

The Shiites' holiest shrines were included, but land that had traditionally been part of the old nation was placed into another new nation called Kuwait.

Lebanon had been part of pre-Ottoman Syria, but the French carved it out separately.

Trans-Jordan, which became the Kingdom of Jordan under a British fiat, was also artificially created by the stroke of a pen. In fact, at the Conference of San Remo in 1922, the League of Nations originally mandated Trans-Jordan to be part of a Jewish homeland.

But Israel surrendered it so that the original inhabitants of the territory of Palestine would have a homeland.

But let's get back to the Iraq problem. The situation as it exists today in Iraq cannot be solved by another imposition of Western stupidity. Sixty-two percent of the Iraqi population is Shiite. The Sunnis make up about 30 percent and the Kurds about 8 percent.

If there is, indeed, a division into three separate states, this is what will happen. The Shiites are a fundamentalist sect of Islam and recognize the Ayatollah of Iran as their spiritual leader. They will immediately reject American-imposed democracy and become inseparably aligned with Iran.

The Sunnis will be forced into an alignment with Sunni Syria for self-protection.

The Kurds appreciate the United States and would remain separate and continue to be our friends. The only problem is that Turkey, Syria and Iran hate the Kurds. Turkey would break relations with us for creating a Kurdish state. It would demand that we remove our extremely vital military bases from Turkish soil.

That would leave the U.S. with two friends in the Middle East that are hated by everyone – Israel and Kurdistan.

A further complication that would surely cause conflict is the fact that almost all of Iraq's oil is in the Shiite and Kurdish areas. There's not much chance of a workable arrangement whereby the Shiites and the Kurds would share their wealth with the Sunnis. Remember, Saddam Hussein was Sunni, and he and his sect inflicted unspeakable suffering on the Shiites and Kurds.

But now, the Shiite-dominated Iraqi Parliament has approved the idea of a three-state Iraq, and the idea is developing legs.

To make matters worse, former Secretary of State James Baker has been leading a panel called the Iraq Survey Group. This committee has been studying the situation and is due to hand the White House just such a recommendation following the elections.

Naturally, the Iraqi Sunnis, responsible for most of the insurgent violence, oppose the plan. As I said, most of the oil is in the Shia and Kurdish Zones.

So if the plan goes forward, the threatened Sunnis will start a civil war. But the Kurds and the Shiites suggest that if the plan doesn't go forward, they will start a civil war. The only way to hold Iraq together would be for the U.S. to impose a ruthless occupation, which we will not do.

The actions of the Western powers, taken decades ago with total ignorance of the area's history, are now insoluble – just as the Bible prophets predicted they would be in the "last days." But these same prophets predicted that this would pave the way for a person of enormous powers who is waiting in the wings to be unveiled – he is called "the anti-Christ." The world is just about ready to embrace him.

Survey says....

 The question someone asked :

When Pres Bush says Iran will not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons... ?

What does that mean?

*****************
Various answers given ( and these from his "supporters" )

1) It means the same as when he said North Korea will not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.
++++++++++++++++

2) I'm glad you asked. We'll make it multiple choice:

A. It's a play on words -- Iran can't develop something they have already created.

B. North Korea will be the one to develop the nukes and Iran can then just trade oil for NK's nukes, thus no development by Iran.

C. Not Iranians, but Russian and Chinese technicians will develop nukes at the Iranian facilities, allowing Iran to deny any hands-on development.

D. It's that tricky definition thingy again, so follow along carefully. The development of a nuclear bomb is not considered a nuclear weapon until it is used in an aggressive manner, which Iran will promise not to do. Blowing Israel into central Africa with a few of them will not be considered an aggressive act by the UN as long as it is for the religious purpose of bringing forth the promised 12th Imam.

There may be more.
+++++++++++++++++++++

3) basically.

while real threats are looming, and there are actual countries testing weapons and blatently threatening us with them, we're stuck in iraq.... and for what?

yeah, what a war on terror.
+++++++++++++++++++

4)
It means that if Iran does further its developement, it will be threatened with more threats of possible threats of the ever looming threat of sanctions--done so by the U.N. in a very threatening manner.
+++++++++++++++++
5)
It means he'll say what it takes to get the GOP vote until November 8th - then its cower in the corner another two years cuddling up to the UN as usual.
+++++++++++++
6)  too am cynical that Persident Bush will actually back up his words with anything other than more words...

BUT.... it just might be that once this next election cycle is done Pres Bush will feel more free to exercise Execuitve powers...

Inside the Asylum of the State Department

Excerpt:

Nearly two years ago I had author and former Undersecretary of State Jed Babbin on air with me. His new book was titled, "Inside the Asylum: Why the State Department is Worse than You Think." After reading it and watching the antics of that department, one almost has to wonder what's in the air or water over there to twist and distort thinking. That's not limited to any administration. It seems no matter who is president, the State Department has a mind of its own and does what is right in their own eyes.

One of my most favored women in public life has been Condoleeza Rice, Secretary of State. Here is a gracious woman, articulate and gracious, now jet setting around the world talking to some of the world's most powerful leaders. And they listen. Yet I fear she has come under the spell of State and has thus has lost some common sense.

If the State Department had a religion it would be Palestinian statehood. On its altar, diplomats are eager to sacrifice the security of America's only reliable Middle East ally, Israel, and, ultimately, our own security as well.

As media analyst Don Feder writes, "Secretary Rice has become the high priestess of a Palestinian state (which would be) the crowning achievement of American foreign policy . . . "

Feder continues, "Her recent address to the American Palestine Task Force was modestly described as the most pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel speech in memory by a major U.S. administration official." She stated, "I believe that there could be no greater legacy for America than to help bring into being a Palestinian state for a people who suffer daily humiliation of living under the so-called Israeli occupation."

Secretary Rice, you know better than most that the only reason Israel is "occupying" some territory is that she was attacked in 1948, 1967, 1973, and other wars, and seized the territory for defensive purposes. But she chooses to characterize the nation that has been our steadfast ally and friend for 60 years to demonstrate her devotion, and that of her department, to a people who celebrated the slaughter of 3,000 Americans on 9/11.

In comparing George Washington, Adams, and Jefferson to Arafat and Abbas and the mad bombers of Hamas she stretches credulity and weakens her own image and that of America. Most Americans would never buy into such nonsense. As Feder states, "Our founding fathers were men of learning, achievement and discernment, not a gang of Allah-intoxicated savages. They demonstrated their courage by pledging their lives, fortunes and sacred honor, not by turning mothers and children into smoldering lumps of mangled flesh."

Yet Rice stated, "The Palestinian people deserve a better life, a life that is rooted in liberty, democracy, uncompromised by violence and terrorism." So the Israelis are the terrorists? Then it is the Israelis blowing up busses and restaurants? It is the Israelis setting off homicide bombers amid innocent women and children?

Want real statistics? In recent polls, 61 percent of Palestinians supported suicide bombings and terrorism, 56 percent favored rocket attacks on civilian targets, 75 percent endorsed the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers, and 97 percent were pro-Hezbollah.

The delusion of the last two years is that Mahmoud Abbas, Arafat's successor, is a moderate at heart, working feverishly for democracy and human rights in Jihadistan, as well as for an enduring peace with Israel. We must not compare Abbas and Fatah with Hamas. Hamas equals terrrorism; Abbas equals moderation and cooperation, even though Abbas financed the 1972 slaughter of Israeli athletes. His PhD thesis was on why the Holocaust really never happened. Read the Palestinian Charter, Dr. Rice. It still calls for the complete destruction of Israel. It doesn't call for a two-state solution. It calls for a one-state solution: Palestine and only Palestine. Both Hamas and Abbas are willing to wade through a river of blood to reach that goal. Tigers do not change their stripes.

A year ago when Iranian president Ahmadinejad began raving about wiping Israel off the map, Abbas' party in Gaza distributed flyers proclaiming, "We affirm our support and backing for the position of the Iranian president toward the Zionist state which, by God's will, will cease to exist."

Why is it not possible for the fools at "foggy bottom," otherwise known as the State Department, to see what is so obvious? To be honest, I do not have an answer. Perhaps there is some end-time apocalyptic purpose in all of this. In the natural it can make no sense. I do believe I gave a clue earlier when I said that men and women are doing what is right in their own eyes exactly as the Bible predicted.

Frankly, "Palestine" makes no sense. It was conjured up by Yaser Arafat in the 1960s.

A vote for civil war

Diana West has written a spot on article with much insight into the US stance in Iraq:
**********************************************
The worst thing about the upcoming elections is, when it comes to war and peace, they turn on a deficient choice. Stay the course vs. cut and run. Keep up your dukes vs. cry "uncle."

For anyone who wants to fight to win, the choice is clear enough, if also non-compelling. Sticking to offense is intuitively better than giving up, but it doesn't inspire stirring campaign slogans. As in: "Vote Republican — at least terrorists' overseas phone calls will continue to be intercepted." Then again, intercepting terrorists' overseas phone calls is considerably better than not.

But, to what end? Here's where the deficiency shows up. What if "the course" is wrong? And what if its destination is a) unreachable or, worse, b) wholly imaginary?

As an Air Force pilot noted in an e-mail to me, he doesn't recall hearing the president define "victory" for Iraq or Afghanistan. Me neither. Terms like "security" and "stabilization" just aren't substitutes. Guided by the false god of democracy, blind to the zealotry of Islamic culture, we have locked onto a course with no rational endpoint.

Even as we pursue "security," "stabilizing" the Shi'ite-dominated, Shariah-guided Iraqi government—and, thus, creating a natural Iranian (Shi'ite) ally — makes zero strategic sense. But, see here, say supporters of the president's Iraq policy: If we don't secure and stabilize the Shi'ite-dominated, Shariah-guided government in Iraq, that same government falls, America suffers defeat in jihadist eyes, and Shi'ite-Sunni war breaks out in full force.

Well, which scenario is better for the U.S. of A?  I vote for civil war. It seems obvious when Shi'ite and Sunni jihadis — and their Islamic world sponsors — are busy slaughtering one another, they have much less time to plan their next attack on Americans, in the region or stateside. This isn't to say there's no role for American forces in the Middle East. But that role may be, as a Marine captain home from Afghanistan and Iraq put it to me, far from booby-trapped Iraqi cities, perhaps in Kurdistan, where they can keep a lid on Iraq while preparing for the next stage of the war on jihad, against Iran and Syria — assuming there is a next stage.

Such a redeployment is no defeat. But it would represent a drastic change in war aims and in the Bush belief in the magical properties of Western-style liberty for truly all. The fact is, democratizing Islamic cultures into secular wonders of ecumenical productivity just ain't going to happen. The sooner we acknowledge this, the better for us. And above all, this war should be, as they say in our therapeutic culture, all about us.

Police to avoid Ramadan arrests

Having just gotten over a 5 day bout with food posioning, I find this makes me sicker then the bad sushi I got hold of , back to the toilet I go........
I assume this means the Catholics with warrants will hench forth not be arrested on Christmas or Easter ? The Brits have gone bloody mad.

From the BBC :

Police in Manchester have been told not to arrest Muslims wanted on warrants at prayer times during Ramadan.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed it had asked detectives not to make planned arrests during those periods for reasons of religious sensitivity.
The advice was emailed out to officers working in Moss Side, Hulme, Whalley Range, Rusholme, Fallowfield, Ardwick, Longsight, Gorton and Levenshulme.
Police said it was not a blanket ban, just a "request for sensitivity".
The email stressed the order did not apply to on-the-spot arrests, only the execution of arrest warrants.

Fanatics lay claim to separate Sunni state

I used to be a staunch supporter of the Iraq War but the unavoidable sad truth is that the Administration had/has a naive understanding of the tenets of Islam and the Middle East in general. There will NEVER be a "democracy" in Iraq where all these parties live together or pull together for the "good" of freedom and the country. Never. It is contrary to teachings of the Koran and what is ingrained in the factions involved. Bush may have had "good intentions" or it may be possible that his own pride and desire to leave a legacy as a "democracy" builder has clouded judgement. The desire to be another Reagan in tearing down the wall of nondemocratic governments ?  Now what is the choice ? Stay and fight a battle for "democracy" that will never be forthcoming and continue to pour in America money and lives in pursuit of a legacy ? As for the terror threat Saddam presented, I think the terror threat the North Korean and the Iranians present is much more grave and how much better our resources may have been spent on them...

Fanatics lay claim to separate Sunni state

An alliance of Sunni insurgent groups claimed yesterday to be establishing a separate Sunni state in the west of Iraq in the latest demonstration of the growing fragmentation of the country.

Map of Iraq

The statement by the Mujahideen Shura Council, an umbrella organisation of fanatical Sunni groups that includes al-Qa'eda, is the first time a Sunni body has supported the break-up of Iraq.

It said the move was in response to the passing by the Iraqi parliament last week of a federalism law which would permit provinces to join together to form self-ruling regions. That is expected to result in the creation of a semi-autonomous Shia zone in the south, similar to the Kurdish state in the north.

A separate Sunni state was needed to protect itself from such an eventuality, the insurgent group said.

At least 117 people have been killed in sectarian attacks since Friday and at least 57 died yesterday in shootings and bombings. They included the brother of the chief prosecutor in Saddam Hussein's trial, shot in front of his wife.

The attacks have focused around Balad, a Shia enclave in a largely Sunni region north of Baghdad. It began on Friday when 17 Shia farm workers were beheaded. Shia fighters responded in force, with Sunni tribal leaders claiming that boys as young as 10 had to be given guns to help protect their villages.

The announcement by the Mujahideen Shura Council gives further credence to fears that Iraq will be unable to hold itself together.

The size and nature of the state it says it intends to form provides an indication of future battle lines. Not only the Sunni-dominated provinces of Anbar, Diyala, Salaheddin and Nineveh would be included but also the oil-rich region of Kirkuk, which the Kurds claim, and parts of Babil and Wasit, which are predominately Shia.

The council also claims all of Baghdad and pledges to implement a fundamentalist form of Shura law reminiscent of the Taliban.

More moderate Sunni groups condemned the council. Mahmud al-Meshhedani, the speaker of the Iraqi parliament and a Sunni, called it "vulgar with no religion, who only kill others under the pretext of jihad".

At a meeting in Kirkuk yesterday, 500 Sunni Arab tribal leaders and representatives said they were committed to maintaining the unity of Iraq. But their solution to the turmoil was no less controversial, as they demanded the immediate release of Saddam.

In a letter released through one of his lawyers in the Jordanian capital of Amman yesterday, Saddam told his countrymen that the "hour of liberation is at hand".

Rice: Palestinians deserve better than the 'humiliation of occupation'

If the Palestinians live in any "humiliation" they have only themselves to blame. Their murderous (unending and sworn) desire to drive Israel into the sea is to their shame. Condi Rice should go back to her ivory tower at Stanford, it is increasingly apparent she is well "schooled" but not well educated.
***************************************************

By The Associated Press very young child with gun

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says Palestinians deserve to live better than they do and be "free of the humiliation of occupation" in a state of their own.

"I promise you my personal commitment to that goal," Rice said at a dinner marking the third anniversary of the American Task Force on Palestine.

"There could be no greater legacy for America," Rice told the group, which describes itself as nonpartisan and supportive of a Palestinian state living side by side with Israel.

"The Palestinian people deserve a better life ... free of the humiliation of occupation," she said.

Rice has made five trips to the region as secretary of state, looking for ways to promote President George W. Bush's advocacy of a two-state solution to the decades-long conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

Meshal Will Never Recognize Israel

Meshal Will Never Recognize Israel 15:25 Oct 12, '06 / 20 Tishrei 5767

(IsraelNN.com) In an interview in the London-based al-Hayat Arabic newspaper, Hamas politburo leader Khaled Meshal, who is based in Damascus, announced Hamas will never formally recognize Israel or the “occupation”.

Meshal stated that he would, however, accept a Palestinian state inside the post ’67 borders, adding there is a possibility of a hudna ceasefire with Israel, but the occupation must end.

The Hamas leader added that his organization is willing to make widespread concessions towards the establishment of a coalition government with Fatah.

While admitting the “Zionist enemy” does exist, he added he does not have to recognize that entity

Abbas Tells US PA Will Recognize Israel, Says Opposite on PA TV

More from Condi's friend Abbas, the "moderate" lying PA Chairman. Give him some more weapons Condi !

Abbas Tells US PA Will Recognize Israel, Says Opposite on PA TV

Arafat taught him well. "War Is Deceit" Update from Hana Levi Julian in Israel National News, with thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist:

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said this week he would ‘fire Hamas’ if the terror group won’t recognize Israel, but sang a different tune on PA TV.

Abbas convinced U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that he is sincere in his commitment to force the PA government to formally acknowledge the Jewish State’s right to exist, said the Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) Thursday.

On PA TV, however, Abbas said “It is not required of Hamas, or of Fatah, or of the Popular Front to recognize Israel.” Abbas is the head of the Fatah party and terror organization, which is currently the minority faction in the PA legislature.

“I do not demand of Hamas nor any other to recognize Israel,” said Abbas in Arabic, “but from the government that works with Israelis in day to day life, yes.”

Rice said she was impressed with the PA leader’s political acumen after their meeting this week. “We have great admiration for you and your leadership,” she said, and committed the U.S. to “redouble efforts” to help PA Arabs.

More US arms to Jew killers

These weapons will only end up killing Jews...the US, are we so ignorant to supply weapons to those who have made it clear (even by their own charter) that the destruction of Israel is their sole goal ?
Is Condi Rice (and the Administration) ignorant, deceived or corrupt ? I report, you decide !

Abbas to request more weapons from US

Militants admit last American arms transfer shared with Palestinian terrorists

Following deadly clashes the past few days between his Fatah organization and Hamas members, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is planning to request a large shipment of weapons from the United States purportedly to arm his group against rival factions, a senior Palestinian official told WND today.

The US government previously sent weapons to Abbas in May after the Palestinian leader requested the arms to bolster Fatah's Force 17
security forces against possible clashes with Hamas.

In June, WND broke the story about how assault rifles that were part of a cache of weapons transferred by the US made its way to members of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades terror group, some of whom are also officers of Force 17. The weapons may have been used in a string of shootings, including an ambush against a busload of Israeli school girls here, Al Aqsa members told WND.

In some of the worst infighting since Hamas won the majority of parliamentary seats earlier this year, 11 Palestinians were killed and more than 100 were injured in Gaza Strip clashes that broke out two days ago when a 3,500-strong Hamas militia confronted members of Fatah's security forces protesting the government's inability to pay their wages.

Last night Hamas attacked several Fatah officers in Gaza. In retaliation, Fatah supporters reportedly attacked and torched Hamas offices throughout the West Bank, including the prime minister's offices in Ramallah.

Fatah clans are known to be more dominant in the West Bank than in Gaza.

Palestinian schools today were closed in Gaza for fear of further clashes.

In a marked escalation of rhetoric, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the declared "military wing" of Fatah, threatened this morning to kill Hamas leaders, including Damascus-based Hamas chieftain Khaled Meshal.

The Brigades, along with the Islamic Jihad terror group, are responsible for every suicide bombing in Israel the past two years. The group has also carried out scores of shooting and rocket attacks against Israeli civilians.

A senior Palestinian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told WND today Fatah security officials noted that in Sunday's firefights Hamas members used weaponry more advanced than what was known to have been in the Hamas arsonal, including newer styles of assault rifles and rocket propelled grenades.

The official said Abbas has enlisted senior Egyptian and Jordanian officials to help him petition the US for more weapons to arm his group, particularly Fatah security forces in Gaza, against Hamas.

The official said the request will be brought up in meetings with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who is in the region this week.

The US considers Abbas to be a "moderate," and regularly supports his Fatah organization with money and weapons.

In May, Egypt, Jordan and Israel were reportedly involved in talks requesting weapons from the US, stating rifles and ammunition were needed to arm Fatah for possible clashes with Hamas. America reportedly agreed.

The weapons were transported in late-May into Israel from the Jordanian border and were delivered to Force 17 by a convoy protected by the Israeli Defense Forces. The cache was driven to Ramallah and to the Gaza Strip border.

In Ramallah, the US weapons were trucked to the main Fatah government building, which is used by both Force 17 and members of the Al Aqsa Brigades, Palestinian officials involved in the transfer told WND.

The US weapons transfer reportedly included 3,000 American-made M-16 assault rifles and over 1 million rounds of ammunition.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced he had approved the shipment of weapons and ammunition, explaining the transfer was meant for Abbas' personal protection.

"I did this because we are running out of time and we need to help Abu Mazen," Olmert told reporters.

But following the transfer, Force 17 senior officer Abu Yousuf told WND in an exclusive interview the American weapons will be shared with the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and utilized for attacks against Jews.

Abu Yousuf is also a member of the Al Aqsa Brigades. He hinted the weapons were used in shooting attacks in June that killed one Israeli civilian and wounded another.

Many Force 17 officers are also members of the Brigades. In June Abbas appointed senior Brigades leader Mahmoud Damra to head Force 17. Damra is on Israel's most wanted list of terrorists. He is accused of masterminding a string of attacks. Damra was arrested by Israel last month.

Abu Yousuf told WND the US and Israel facilitated the May transfer of weapons to his Force 17 unit "for its own political purposes. We are not concerned with the reasons. The weapons will not be used against our brothers, only (against) Israelis."

Sources close to the Al Aqsa Brigades told WND the American assault rifles were used in three separate anti-Israel shooting attacks in June. One attack killed a 35-year-old Israeli Arab on a major West Bank highway on the outskirts of Jerusalem. Israeli security officials say the shooters likely mistook the victim for a Jew. The second attack, which occurred June 13 on the same highway, lightly wounded an Israeli.

In the third attack, the Al Aqsa Brigades on June 19 on a West Bank highway ambushed a bus carrying Israeli school girls. The bus was armored. The school girls escaped unharmed.

Abu Yousuf refused to confirm whether the American weapons were used in the spate of highway shootings, but he hinted the information was accurate.

"It is no coincidence that as soon as these American weapons arrived, we were able to carry out these accurate shootings," Abu Yousuf said.
